We've all heard that we can't lose weight unless we exercise. And it is a well known fact that if we take in more calories than we burn we will soon be gaining weight. Why is this? It is simply the way our bodies are made. We were not built to be idle, we must move to be in good health, and that includes being at a sensible weight.
I used to have an aversion to exercise. I hated the thought of doing it. So I made up excuses like: I don't have time or it's too hot, or even I'll do it tomorrow. Does that sound familiar? And tomorrow you make up another excuse. Those tomorrows add up my friend. Well, let me tell you, it doesn't have to be like that. Once I committed to it and actually got started with an exercise regiment, Foyle's war I found that there is hardly a day that I don't want to do it. I discovered that exercise makes me feel so good that I rarely want to miss that part of my day. Sometimes though, we all need to be motivated. Here are few ideas to help you get started.
Buy a new exercise outfit. You'll feel smart and cute and want to show it off a little.
Pets are great motivators. Dogs and even some cats love to go for a walk with you. And they won't let you forget either.
Make this some "you" time, a rare commodity for most of us.
Pick music you love and listen to it while you exercise
Or if you have exercise equipment, watch a movie while you "walk".
Ideally, to lose weight you need to do some kind of aerobic exercise five days a week for 20 minutes. That is enough to get your heart rate up, and to raise your metabolism so you can burn more calories even several hours after you finish exercising. Everyone agrees that one of the best ways to do this is walking, but you are not limited to that. Running, swimming, dancing, and cycling are just a few others. You don't have to pick just one either, you can mix it up. Variety in exercises can be your spice of life.
And research is now showing that we need some weight lifting thrown in. A simple way to start that is to take two cans of food and hold one in each hand. Now move your hands in every direction-straight out; then straight up and down; then side to side; then diagonally both ways and eventually in a circle. Certainly, there are far more sophisticated ways to do it, but this will get you started.
After you've established a regular exercise routine you can do some little things to help you burn even more calories. Try parking further from the door so you have to take more steps, or take the stairs rather than the elevator. You could walk down to the mailbox instead of picking it up in your car on the way up the driveway, or walk to the restaurant to pick up your lunch. These are just a few ideas; see how creative you can get.
Lastly, remember that there are lots of other benefits to exercise than just losing weight. These include sleeping better, improved cognitive levels, prevention of heart disease, increased lung capacity, look better, feel great, just to name a few. So next time you are feeling down, get off the couch and take a walk, you will suddenly notice you are feeling much better.
